About Out of Left
Out of Left is essentially a place for me to dump my thinking about everything baseball. I've been toying with the idea of putting the thought experiments and conversations I have with a family, friends (and myself) about the sport down on "paper" for years, and here we are.
I'm a massive fan of the sport, a Red Sox fan by birth, Rays fan by proximity to the field as a child, and I chalk up my current fanhood of the sport as a whole in part, to the writing of brilliantly curious people I've had the pleasure of reading over the past 20+ years.
Today I find myself interested in lots of different angles of the sport, from how front offices construct a roster, how are skillsets valued and how does the value of that change over time, how does the league function from an economic standpoint, what does that mean for the players, the fans, the sport as a whole outside of the league. What is the state of baseball internationally, etc. I think I'll wind up writing about an eclectic spread of topics here, and don't anticipate having one "thing" that this site will really hone in on, but I guess we'll see.
Some of the sites that I've frequented as a reader over the years have been MLB Trade Rumors, Spotrac, Roster Resource, PitcherList, Razzball, Baseball Reference, and most importantly for me, Fangraphs.
To be clear I have no association with any of the above, but ultimately if I am able to create pieces of writing about the sport that ever resemble some of the wonderful stuff I've been able to read from those outlets, I'd find that very fulfilling. This is a creative exercise for me more than anything else.
If you enjoy what you read here, if you agree, disagree, or want to talk about the sport in whatever way seems fun and interesting for you, comment, sign up for the email list, shoot me an email, whatever feels right.
